Georgia leads the nation in maternal mortality. Most pregnant people don’t receive evidence-based care. Many describe their births as traumatic or abusive. Georgia families deserve better.

The journey to parenthood is transformational and important. The way birthing people are treated during childbirth can stick with them for a lifetime. Yet many Georgia women describe births that are abusive, dangerous, and traumatic. Georgia’s maternity care is the worst in the nation, with the highest maternal death rate. The Georgia Birth Advocacy Coalition wants to change that. We believe that an abusive health care culture will only change when patients know and assert their rights. It’s time to fight back. It’s time to demand better. Learn more about who we are and what we do.

How can we help?

Birth Options

Birthing people have the right to collaborative care and a range of birth options. Having access to a range of birth options improves outcomes.

Birth Trauma

A third of people describe their births as traumatic. Most say the trauma was due to mistreatment by care providers. Birth can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be traumatic.

Maternal Mortality

More than 60% of maternal deaths are preventable. Many happen as women plead for medical care. Childbirth doesn’t have to be deadly.

Evidence-Based Pregnancy Care

Evidence-based pregnancy care lowers health care costs, reduces the risk of long-term health problems, and saves lives. Yet most birthing people don’t get evidence-based care.

Maternal
Mental Health

Maternal mental health is about more than hormones. Supportive communities and a better birth culture can improve maternal mental health.

Discrimination in Maternity Care

Women of color are more likely to die during childbirth, more likely to have their pleas for help ignored, and less likely to receive evidence-based care.
